マイクロソフトから発売された代表的なTPSシリーズの第2作目で、突如地底から現れた侵略者：ローカスト達と、人類の存亡を賭けて戦う。
物陰を利用したカバーアクション主体の戦術性の高い銃撃戦を売りとしている。
度を越した残虐表現も健在で、今回は、瀕死の敵に追い討ち出来る『処刑』も追加された。
続編で、完結編の『Gears of War 3』は当初、2011年4月発売が予定されていたが、同年秋に延期となった。
